Four Must-Try Apps

by Tessa Lengeling

There are a million different applications out there for smartphones, so let’s narrow it down. Here are 4 apps and their evaluation.

  • Tinder

College students love meeting new people. Since Valentine’s Day is coming up, this app is the perfect mix of creepy and unrealistic, yet totally entertaining and a good self-esteem booster.

“Tinder is how people meet. It’s like real life, but better,” as said on the Tinder website.

Tinder is being talked about everywhere and is the new wave of making friends or finding hookups, whichever the user prefers.

Facebook is great for interacting with people you are attracted to, but they aren’t always around your area and there are too many options. Who has time to look through thousands of photos and keep track of multiple chat windows?

Tinder is in a slideshow format that allows you to flip through photos of potential matches, so you can hit a little heart button if you think they are cute and pursue it by sending a message, or you can give them an “x” and move on to the next.

Let’s face it, this app is kind of creepy, but also brilliant.

People love attention and get little ego boosts after each match is formed. The app shows what interests you have similar to your potential match based on your Facebook profile.

Huffington Post College said, “Tinder has found a way to enable people to socialize beyond the confines of their own personal social circles, while also instilling in them a sense of security because they are allowed limited access to their potential “playmate” before even committing to finding him/her attractive.”

Tinder meshes your already formed social circles into one, which is the newest trend to hit smartphone apps. Keep your eye out for it, and maybe you’ll find a Valentine in time.

  • My Fitness Pal

The New Year has only begun, which means New Year’s resolutions are on the downhill slope to becoming mute. But in case you are crazy about fitness or need the motivation to maintain your workouts and healthy eating habits, this app is perfect for you.

This app is perfect for those that like to track their daily consumption and exercise. It’s completely free and super easy to sign up. You have to put in your current weight as well as your goal weight, age, sex, and current level of your active lifestyle.

Once the app realizes what your goals are, it will give you a target calorie intake for the day broken down into carbs, fat, protein, sodium, and sugar. This is super because weight loss is accomplished by 70 percent of the work being done in the kitchen.

Try Fitness Pal out and see how long you can make your New Year’s resolution last.

  • Wunderlist

For the organizers and OCD victims out there, Wunderlist is a great tool to aid you in your obession.

It’s a simple idea.

Put all of your to-do lists and tasks into one location. Sticky notes covering your desk do not necessarily help ease stress, and they just make you realize how much you have to do. Wunderlist helps you manage your tasks as well as show you what you accomplished yesterday and need to do today by using Smart Lists.

You can add reminder alarms and due dates, share your projects with people, and even add tasks by email. Wunderlist compiles your life into one easy-to-manage app. If you’re struggling to keep all your assignments and activities straight, Wunderlist will become your new best friend this semester.

And lastly…

  • Wanelo

Wanelo is a site that allows you to follow retailers and people with similar style and view clothes and accessories that are intriguing to you. It can be altered by what you like as well as where you prefer to shop.

Or maybe you can find something new.

The images are from varying stores as you scroll down the page. If you see something you like, you can either post it for your own page and record, or you can click it and it leads you to the website to purchase the item.

You are shopping hundreds of different retailers in the palm of your hand. No need to spend hours at the mall going from store to store and never finding anything you like. Just go to Wanelo, and you will be led to the perfect website and purchase items right on the spot.

  • Bored waiting for elliptical at the gym? Track your progress so far with My Fitness Pal.
  • Maybe you just made new plans and need a new outfit to go out in. Use Wanelo. Maybe those plans need to be put on your list of reminders. Wunderlist has your back.
  • Or maybe you just need to make it look like you’re busy, as the person you got matched with on Tinder walks by and your life became 20 times more awkard.

Whatever the case may be, there is a world of apps available for anyone with any interest.
