INDIANOLA, Iowa – Wartburg cashed in on two-first half corner kick opportunities on their way to a 2-0 victory over Simpson in the teams’ conference opener.

A corner kick from Wartburg’s Brittany Frush found Hannah Turner for a header to give Wartburg the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. With five seconds remaining in the first half, Kerri Golinghorst scored the Knights’ (5-2-2, 1-0 IIAC) second goal of the game, once more on a corner kick.

Simpson (2-9, 0-1 IIAC) played tough defense in the second half but were unable to put any real offensive threats together on the afternoon, only putting up four shots to Wartburg’s 12. Simpson never had a corner kick opportunity while Wartburg had 7.

The Storm are now being outscored by an average of 2.18 goals per game.

“We definitely need to start taking more shots,” goalkeeper Kristin Riley said. “We need to work on our offensive game mostly. Our defensive game today was really good, probably one of the best defensive games of the year. But we just need to start taking more shots.”

Simpson women will head up to Storm Lake for a 7:30 p.m. contest with Buena Vista this Wednesday.
