Men’s soccer runs into formidable Luther team, lose 2-0

DECORAH, Iowa – Men’s soccer wasn’t able to knock off a impressive Luther College team on Saturday, losing 2-0 in what was a sort of homecoming for Luther graduate, Rick Isaacson and Decorah-resident Mitchell White.

Josh Galvin got the No. 7 Norse (10-1-0, 2-1-0 IIAC) in front right off the bat with a goal in the second minute. Matheus Beato tacked on another goal in the 45th minute to take the Norse into the half with a 2-0 lead.

Simpson wasn’t able to chip into the two-goal deficit, putting up 12 shots and eight on goal to no avail. Both Marcus Varnum and White put up two shots on goal, as a goalkeeping combination of Tommy Breen and Peter Wright made seven saves on Luther’s way to a team-shutout. Zach McEntee made four saves while allowing two Norse goals.

Men’s soccer will square off against the second CCIW opponent on their 2014 schedule as they return home for a matchup with Augustana College (Ill.) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
