STORM LAKE, Iowa – Despite jumping out to 21-7 lead over the Beavers of Buena Vista, the Storm weren’t able to hang on to first half lead, losing 38-31 in what was yet another volume in the history of thrilling games between these two teams.
Dylan Berkey ran for his fourth touchdown of the season giving Simpson an early touchdown lead after his one-yard run at the end of the first quarter.
Things were looking bright when Berkey connected with Corbin Clark from 14 yards out giving Simpson a two-touchdown lead.
Buena Vista’s scoring started six minutes later as Gunner Gilland caught a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bobby Brown. This was a duo the Storm (3-1, 0-1 IIAC) could not contain Saturday, as Brown threw for 392 yards and five touchdowns, with 236 yards and three touchdowns of his performance landing in the hands of receiver Gunner Gilland.
The Brown-Gilland combination was far from done for the first half as they brought the Beavers even with the Storm at 21 after two more touchdowns. Buena Vista then took the lead 28-21 with 15 seconds left in the 1st half on another Brown touchdown pass.
The Beavers started off the second half scoring ten more points to finish their streak of 31-unanswered points. Kicker Logan Klein broke the scoring drought for the Storm six minutes into the fourth quarter with a 34-yard field goal.
Seven minutes later Berkey and Clark connected for their third touchdown in the air on a nine-yard strike making it 31-38, Buena Vista.
Clark had a breakout day, catching three touchdowns on 124 yards receiving. Berkey passed for 304 yards on 22-38. While throwing for three touchdowns, Berkey continued to have problems turning the ball over as he was intercepted three times.
Simpson was at the 11-yard line of the Beavers with 30 seconds left before Berkey was intercepted, ending the Storm late-game drive and their chances of at least tying things up at 38.
This marks Simpson’s third one-possession loss to Buena Vista in as many years.
Simpson looks to rebound in game two of the IIAC schedule next Saturday at 4 p.m. as they travel to Dubuque to face the 1-3 Spartans.
