Men’s Soccer loses a Double-OT Heartbreaker to Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Men’s soccer lost a crucial 2OT match in Dubuque against the third place Spartans, 2-1.

The teams were just eight minutes from a 1-1 draw before Gonzalo Hernandez netted the game-winning goal for Dubuque (6-7-3, 4-1-1 IIAC) in the 102nd minute.

Dubuque’s Brandon Wiley also came up big, scoring the opening goal in the 54th minute while also assisting on Hernandez’s game-winning goal.

The freshman from Pierre, S.D., Garrett Pochop, scored the lone goal for Simpson (11-8, 2-4 IIAC) coming off of a Cody Jacobson assist in the 61st minute.

This was the third match in the last five years between these two teams that required two overtimes to decide the outcome.

Both teams were very evenly match when looking at the game’s box score, as Dubuque put up 19 shots to Simpson’s 16, while earning two more corner kicks, seven, to Simpson’s five.

Despite already clinching the six seed in the IIAC Tournament at the very least, Simpson will have a chance to clinch the five seed in their final regular season match of the season against Central College at 7 p.m back at Buxton Stadium. Both teams come into play with a 2-4 record in IIAC play, while Central has a far worse overall record at 5-11.
