Simpson fall short in overtime loss to William Penn

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kelly Button scored the golden goal on a 20-yard left footed shot that arched over goalkeeper Kristin Riley to give William Penn a 2-1 overtime win Wednesday.

This was only William Penn’s second win against the Storm in their school’s history after coming into play 9-1-2 against Simpson.

The Lady Statesmen were in control of much of the game after taking the lead in the 39th minute on a Silvia Munoz’s score, also from 20 yards out.

Simpson (2-14-1, 0-4-1 IIAC) was stagnant for much of the game until the 78th minute when Bailey Wilmes found Kate Morford for a header off of a corner kick to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Storm seemed to have taken the momentum from William Penn (6-7-3, 2-2-1 MCC) in the final 10 minutes of regulation as they put some of their best chances on goal all night during that time span.

The Lady Statesmen were able to stem the tide and eventually give Button the chance to give William Penn their sixth victory in overtime, handing Simpson its fourth overtime loss of the season in the process.

Once again, Simpson was outshot by the opposition, as William Penn put 17 shots up to the Storm’s nine, while goalkeeper Kristin, who is averaging 7.19 saves per game, only made three on the night.

With the non-conference slate for 2014 over, Simpson will close out the regular season with two conference games, beginning with a 1 p.m. matchup with first place, 13-4 Dubuque on Saturday.
