DUBUQUE, Iowa – After Simpson College women’s basketball’s dramatic 88-81 OT win Wednesday, as a player and a coach you’re always aware of the potential let down that follows those types of games.

Unfortunately, for the Storm, that trend held true against the University of Dubuque on Saturday, as women’s basketball fell to the Spartans 78-72 in Dubuque.

Four players scored in double-figures for Simpson, with Wednesday’s hero, Brittany Hedrick, leading the way with 16 points, five assists and two steals.

After Maddie Bosworth notched a career-high, 25 points on Wednesday, the junior was held to only two points on 1-2 from the floor.

The key statistic on the night came from the free throw line, as Dubuque (11-6, 5-1) went 26-37 from the charity stripe as the Storm committed 26 personal fouls.

Simpson (13-4, 3-3) was out in front early, leading 17-15 with 9:25 remaining in the first half.

Dubuque would take the 29-26 lead into the half, until Simpson briefly regained a slim 30-29 advantage.

But from the on, it was all Dubuque.

The Spartans would never relinquish the lead after Kayla Springer’s two free throws put Dubuque up 31-30 with 17:17 remaining in the game.

The Storm would cut the lead to four at 57-61 at the 5:22 mark, but a 25-point performance from Jenna Kostas and some late free throws helped stave off Simpson.

Simpson was outrebounded 37-31, which is the fifth time the Storm have been outrebounded in six conference games.

Amongst the other leading scorers for the Storm was Katie Ahrenholtz with 12 points off the bench and Britney Boland with 11 points and five rebounds.

Mackenzie Haupt, who eventually fouled out, added 10 points.

Whitney Van Wyk continued with her well rounded game, scoring six points, dishing out three assists, nabbing two rebounds and getting two steals.

Simpson will travel back home to face off with Central College who sits at the bottom of the IIAC at 9-8 0-6 in conference after their most recent, 62-52 loss to Coe on Saturday.
