INDIANOLA, Iowa – It was anyone’s game going into the second half at 35-31 Coe, but the Kohawks would get 11 points on 3-4 from 3-point land in the second half alone from Mickey Hansche as they beat Simpson College women’s basketball, 70-55 Wednesday.

“I thought we lost our intensity and didn’t attack as much,” head coach Brian Niemuth said. “Half of our shots were 3-pointers so we were settling instead of trying to get the ball in the paint.”

Hansche would go 5-7 from three, scoring a game-high 19 improving her season 3-point total to 74. Freshman Aleena Hobbs added 18 points, scoring at will on the block alongside Megan Hayes who scored 14.

All together, Coe (16-8, 9-4) shot 9-14 from 3-point range, and 47.4 percent overall.

Simpson (16-8, 6-7), trailed 39-36 after a MacKenzie Haupt 3-pointer at the 17:38 mark although an 11-0 Coe run from there helped keep Simpson at bay the rest of the way not getting much closer than a seven point deficit.

Maddie Bosworth came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points for Simpson and Brittany Hedrick scored 12 points in the first half.

Whitney Van Wyk played another all-around game for the Storm, scoring only three but recording three rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks.

Once again, points in the paint and rebounding were an issue for the Storm. Coe outrebounded Simpson, 46-32 while scoring 24 more points in the paint as well.

Simpson has one more regular season game, coming up at 2 p.m. on Saturday as they host Loras College. Saturday’s outcome will determine their seeding in the conference tournament, which will be a place at either fifth or sixth in the conference.

Possible opponents are Coe or Loras, for Simpson.

“We have to get going with our confidence and understand people miss shots and have turn overs,” Niemuth said. “But we have to play through it and not get down on ourselves that quickly. If we play Coe again we have to figure out a way to stop at least two of their big three scorers in Hansche, Hobbs and Hayes.”
