Tips for acing that interview

by Shayna Holle

Applying for jobs is stressful. There’s no doubt about it. Actually having the interview, though, is a whole different story.  Cut the stress and anxiety by following these few simple interview techniques.

Research the company.

Don’t set yourself up for failure by not knowing anything about the company and position you’re applying for. There’s nothing worse than the interviewer asking why you want to work for the company and you being at a loss for words. A lack of preparation probably won’t get you hired.

Look good.

Suits can be expensive, but having one is absolutely worth it. Think of it as an investment for your future. It’s not like you won’t wear it again.

Eye contact is crucial.

Maintaining appropriate eye contact makes you look confident, even when you’re not. It also shows employers you’re personable and focused. Avoiding eye contact can make you seem bored and distracted.

Be enthusiastic.

No employer wants to hire someone who seems disinterested. Asking questions is an easy way to show your enthusiasm for the company and the position you’re applying for. It’s the perfect way to make a great first impression and to learn more about the company and the position.

Highlight specific skills and qualities.

It’s important to be humble, but being too humble will make you seem unambitious and boring. It also causes you to miss out on showcasing your talents and experience. Show the interviewer you’re the most promising and best candidate for the job.

Be conscientious of body language.

Your interview begins the moment you walk in the door. Remember to stand up straight and to avoid slouching when sitting down.
