INDIANOLA, Iowa – Women’s soccer nearly pulled the upset and knocked off No. 24 Dubuque on Saturday, but the Storm couldn’t quite get over the hump as they fell 2-1 to the Spartans.
Dubuque would score in the 2nd minute and again in the 30th minute before Simpson and goalkeeper Zoe Seiler shut out the Spartans (8-2-1, 1-1-0) for the remaining 60 minutes.
The Storm (2-8-0, 0-2-0) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 41st minute when Casey Reisen snuck a shot past Dubuque goalkeeper Paige Dykstra.
Reisen’s team-best third goal came following a header from Meredith Harrison that fell out of Dykstra hands, setting up Reisen. Harrison was credited with the assist.
Seiler, who has emerged as the starting goalkeeper for Simpson, made nine saves to help the Storm stay in the game. Dubuque outshot Simpson 21-9 and put a series of dangerous attacks on net.
Simpson will continue the search to snap a six-game losing streak as it heads to Iowa Wesleyan to take on the Tigers at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
