Winning on the road isn’t supposed to happen that often, but don’t say that to the men’s basketball team.

The Storm won two out of three games last week on the road, and three out of four since Christmas break ended.

“Our goal was to win all four of those games and we only won three,” said sophomore Matt Brown. “We let one slip away, but winning three isn’t too bad.”

Tuesday, Jan. 8 against Luther, Simpson was able to pull out a close one, winning 60-58.

Junior Matt McCulla came off the bench to score 13 points and grab 10 rebounds. Junior Jesse Harris scored a team-high 15 points in the game and become the 14th player in Simpson history to go over the 1,000 point milestone.

“It is a major accomplishment,” said Head Coach Bruce Wilson.

“It shows consistency because you have to average double figures, and to do that in the middle of your junior year is great.”

“It was nice and it is always good to see that all your hard work paid off,” Harris said. “It was also nice that we won that game and three out of four for the week.”

The men followed up that game with another close one against Cornell Jan. 11. Cornell was able to prevail 76-74 in a game that went into overtime.

Sophomore Jason Snyder led all Simpson starters with 14 points. Brown and senior Shane Bogaards each contributed off the bench. Brown had 14 points and Bogaards had 13.

“Cornell played well in the first half, but we didn’t rebound the way we wanted to. If we had rebounded, we would have won the game,” said Wilson.

The Storm had to step back on the court the next night against Coe. They were able to put things behind them and win 78-71.

“We played fairly well,” said Harris.

“We had a setback against Cornell, but I thought that we showed a lot of character coming back and winning versus Coe.”

Brown finished with 12 points and five rebounds and Harris ended the game with 10 points. Junior Jesse Von Behren tied his career high with 11 points off the bench.

Simpson has three home games ahead of them now and will be looking to build on their 6-8 overall record and 4-3 conference record.
