It appears that surpassing the 1,000-point milestone isn’t going to be the only honor that junior Jesse Harris is going to receive this season.

Harris, a forward on the men’s basketball team, has been nominated along with nine other players around the country for the Josten’s Trophy.

The Josten’s Trophy is given to the Division III Player of the Year in recognition for their performance on and off the court.

“It is a real big honor because the Josten’s Trophy combines what you are doing on the court and off,” Harris said. “So it’s nice to know you’re making contributions in both areas.”

Harris averaged 16.6 points per game on 50.5 percent shooting from the field (both led the team) this past season. His 1,228 career points has moved him up to sixth on Simpson’s all-time career scoring list.

But Harris’s activities and production off the court are even more astonishing. He has served as a resident assistant, volunteered to mentor the special needs of children in swimming, basketball and track and he has been a member of The Simpsonian.

With all of this that Harris does, he is still able to maintain a 3.95 grade point average. These accomplishments are why Harris has also been named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII first team.

“It is nice to be rewarded for the effort that I have put into my class work,” Harris said. “It’s good to see that your hard work is paying off in an area that you are making a career in.”

This is the second straight year that Harris has been chosen to the first team Academic All-District. He is now eligible for a place on the Verizon Academic All-American team that will be announced around March 7.

The Josten’s Trophy winner will be announced around March 1. But Harris isn’t too concerned about the outcome; he is content with being nominated for the awards.

“I was surprised when I was nominated for them, and I was honored,” Harris said. “They are both great honors and I am happy to be rewarded with them.”

In addition to these national nominations, Harris has been selected to the 2002 IIAC Academic All-Conference team. He was also a finalist for the IIAC’s Male Scholar of the Year.
