Golf seasons tee off

With the weather continually getting warmer, the second round of the men and women’s golf season is underway.

The Storm men have participated in two meets up until this point. The first meet took place March 29-30 at the Central Invitational in Ankeny. As a team, the storm men placed eighth in this tournament, with a team score of 634.

Junior Josh Leuhmann posted the team’s best score of 149 for the entire weekend.

“We struggled a bit at the beginning because this was our first tournament of the season, but we came back and played well,” said Luehmann.

Advancing into the spring season, sophomore Alex Schenfeld and Luehmann are expected to contribute greatly to the team.

“We are a pretty young team, but have a lot of overall potential. If we put that potential together we will be very successful,” said Luehmann. The storm men’s most recent tournament was the weekend of April 5-6, at the William Penn Invitational in Oskaloosa. The next outing for the Men will be April 9 at the Loras Invitational.

The Storm women have also gotten their season underway with this past weekend’s tournament at Truman State, in Kirksville, Mo. This tournament marked the beginning of their spring season with their placement of fourth out of eight teams.

“We did not play very well for our first tournament and there is a lot of room for improvement,” said sophomore Karen Smith. “Our main goal for the spring season is getting our average down.”

Two of the Storm Women golfers are returning with hopes of again advancing to Nationals. Sophomore Senta Willenborg and Smith both had the experience of competing at Nationals as freshman last spring.

The women’s next meet is at Loras College on April 11. Consistency is high on the list of priorities for the women.

“We will have to come out with consistent scores in order to win at Loras,” said Smith.
