Lots of teams experience tough luck throughout the course of a season, and for the Simpson baseball team, right now is that time.

The Storm have gone into a tailspin losing their five of their last seven games giving them a 16-12 record overall and a 2-6 record in conference.

“We are going through a little bit of a slump right now,” said junior Scott Sibbel. “Our pitchers, as well as our hitters are having a tough time and we aren’t performing real well.”

The last four losses have been by the hands of Upper Iowa and Wartburg. Wednesday, April 10, the Peacocks swept two games from the Storm, winning 4-2 and 8-7.

Sibbel and freshman Joey Young were both 2-3 in the first game. In the second game, senior Nick Sinn went 2-3 with a home run and four RBI’s. Senior Tony Coppola also had a home run in the second game.

“We have a pretty good team, we just can’t catch any breaks right now,” said freshman Dan Rieck.

Things didn’t get any better for Simpson against Wartburg last Saturday. Wartburg won both games 10-2 and 16-11.

Young was 2-3 with two doubles and Rieck and freshman Jon Clanton each had a run and RBI in the first game. Sibbel was 3-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI’s in the second game and senior Andy Walker was also 3-5 with three runs and three RBI’s.

“I think our kids played very hard and they battled hard,” Sirianni said. “They just didn’t quit and they showed a great deal of character. Things just didn’t happen for us.”

There isn’t just one thing that can be pinpointed as the reason for the team’s problems right now. Nothing is going well on either side of the ball.

“It has just been a variety of things and we just haven’t been able to put things together,” Sirianni said.

Even with the current skid, the team is staying optimistic about what is happening. They know that this isn’t a live or die situation.

“Four games aren’t going to make or break a season,” Sibbel said. “We played well early in the season and I feel that we can still play that well.”

As for the rest of the season, the Storm are looking to right the ship and get back to winning. In order to do this though, they are going to take a little bit of a different approach towards the remainder of the season.

“I think the objective at this point is to look at the rest of the season as a new year,” Sirianni said. “We are going to regroup and see how much better we can get before the end of the year.”
