Volleyball defeats nation’s No. 2 team

The Simpson Storm volleyball team may be low on numbers this year compared to the past, but it still managed to knock off the No. 2 team in the nation this past weekend.

The Storm edged Elmhurst College 3-2 as senior Jessica Nauman recorded a team high 17 kills and junior Rachael Spree had 11 kills respectively. Fellow junior Liz Whims had 29 assists in the win.

“We have a ton of depth on our team. We have a lot of players that can play a lot of different positions,” said Head Coach Lana Smith.

Simpson also beat Benedictine College this past weekend. Nauman led the way once again with 14 kills.

“We played up to our level and it showed by the outcome,” senior Katie Weisz said.

The Storm are off to a 9-6 record so far this season.

“We really need to work on not playing to our opponent’s ability,” Spree said. “We have a lot of athletic ability we just need to mesh together a little more.”

The Storm also hit a bump in the road when sophomore Amanda Chizek went down with a sprained ankle.

“She (Chizek) was a big contributor for us,” said Smith.

“Both Wartburg and Central are beatable this year,” Smith said. “We are just waiting for everything to come together for us as a team.”

The Storm will get their chance against the Dutch when they travel to Central on Tuesday.
