Men’s Basketball

The Storm men’s basketball team stomped all over the Central Dutch with a large margin of victory to show.

“Central was a big win for us, they were the conference champions last year” said junior Barry Moore. “Plus we wanted to get a win in for the seniors.”

The Simpson men took the victory 94-75. The team had also just come off of a huge win at Wartburg the previous weekend.

The team also traveled to Buena Vista that weekend, but didn’t fare as well on Beaver territory. The men defeated Wartburg 73-65 over Wartburg and lost 70-82 to Buena Vista.

“We would have loved a sweep,” said Head Coach Bruce Wilson. “But it’s really important to get one team on their home court.”

The men returned home from the Christmas break trip to Phoenix, Ariz. with a 2-1 record, which helped carry them into their weekend on the road of conference games. The Storm is currently 8-3 overall and are 3-1 on their Conference record.

Wilson contributes a lot of the success to the mere fact that the team has 13 men on any given night that are able to contribute to the team’s success. “With so many men able to contribute we are able to be a lot more flexible and we don’t have to worry so much about foul trouble,” said Wilson. “We are also able to play more aggressive, I think that’s what makes this team so fun to coach.”

The Simpson men will be hosting Coe and Cornell College this weekend at 8 p.m. and 6 p.m. with hopes of adding two more to the win column for the team’s conference record.

Women’s Basketball

The Simpson women’s basketball team has now improved its record to 4-0 after this weekend’s defeating rival Central College.

“We were excited to come out and play,” said senior Amy VanPelt. “After getting beat the past couple of years we were ready for some pay back.”

The Storm beat the Dutch 77-48, which didn’t prove to be the usual last minute shot win that most Central games come down to. The women were coming off of a great weekend of road games at Buena Vista and Wartburg, which also helped boost the energy going into last Saturday night’s game.

The team beat the Beavers and Knights 76-62 and 74-62, respectively with a highly energized crowd cheering the team on to victory on Wartburg’s home turf.

“It was important for us to get an early jump on the conference race,” said Head Coach Brian Niemuth. “The women did a nice job of coming back ready to play after returning from Las Vegas.”

The women returned from the Christmas break trip to Las Vegas, Nev. with a 1-1 record with their loss coming in overtime to the 7th rated team in the nation at the time, DeSales University.

“Las Vegas was a big reason we did so well at Buena Vista and Wartburg,” said Niemuth. “We had some outstanding competition, but we also had lots of confidence knowing that we could play with any team there.”

The Storm will continue its crowd pleasing at home this weekend when the team hosts Coe on Friday at 6 p.m. and hosts Cornell on Saturday at 4 p.m.
