Volleyball

Simpson volleyball wrapped up a successful week with a win over Upper Iowa University on Tuesday, Sept. 9 and winning the Wartburg Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The Wartburg Invitational win marked the first tournament the Storm volleyball players have won since the 2000 Simpson Invitational. Simpson opened the tournament defeating St. Olaf 3-1.

A 3-0 victory over Bethel ended day one for the Storm and also gave head coach Lana Smith her 80th career victory.

Simpson opened day two beating No. 18 Wartburg 3-2 and No. 28 Nebraska Wesleyan 3-2. Stewart was named tournament MVP and Spree and Everding were named to the All-Tournament team.

Women’s Soccer

On Sept. 10, the Simpson women’s soccer team was defeated by Grand View College 3-0. Two days later the team had a close victory in Lincoln, Neb., against Nebraska Wesleyan. Freshman Morgan Kelly scored in the last five minutes to secure the victory 3-2. The Storm pounded York College the following day winning 8-0. Senior Erin Goettl and freshman Ashley Curran each scored three goals and had two assists.

Men’s Soccer

The Simpson men’s soccer team won 2-1 on Sept. 12 against Nebraska Wesleyan. Storm goalie and senior Jason Whichman had 3 saves in the last 10 minutes of play. On Sept. 13, the Storm tied with St. John’s 2-2. Sophomore Brandon Volz and sophomore Angel Salcido scored the Simpson goals.

Women’s Golf

In Waseca, Minn., the women’s golf team took fourth place at the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational this past weekend. Top scorer for the Storm was senior Amber DeRiemaker. DeRiemaker placed third (167), three shots behind the winner. Sophomore Steph Schenfeld also placed in the top 20.
