After the Storm

Volleyball

The Simpson volleyball team spent Labor Day weekend playing in the Elmhurst Tournament in Elmhurst, Ill. The Storm lost in the opening match 3-0 on Friday to UW-Oshkosh but rebounded that night to defeat Illinois Wesleyan, 3-1.

The Storm’s success continued into Saturday by defeating the Wartburg Knights, 3-1. The Knights have defeated the Storm in its past five meetings. The Storm ended tournament play with a win against UW-Stevens Point, 3-0.

Simpson Storm had individual success in Elmhurst as well. Junior Shannon Stewart was named to the All-Tournament team and Junior Amanda Chizek tied her career high with 12 kills and posted a career high of 24 digs.

Women’s Golf

Simpson women golfers had a successful weekend finishing third at the UW- Eau Claire Invitational held at the Mill Run Golf Course in Eau Claire, WI. The Storm trailed the winning team, UW-Oshkosh by 22 strokes and the second place team, UW-Eau-Claire, was 12 strokes ahead of the Storm.

Senior Senta Willenbourg placed second at the Invitational. Willenbourg shot a 161, one shot behind the leader. Senior Amber DeRiemacker and sophomore Steph Schenfeld tied for 11 place. The Storm had four other golfers place in the top 50.

Men’s Soccer

The Simpson men’s soccer teamed kicked off the 2003 season in Indianola with at 2-1 victory against Bethel on Aug. 30. The Storm scored both goals before Bethel had a chance to respond. The Storm continued to struggle late into the match taking two yellow cards. Bethel had the opportunity to tie the game with 14 seconds left but the kick fell short securing Simpson with the victory.

The Storm continued its success on Aug. 31 defeating Augsburg in Indianola. Senior Henry Peterson opened the scoring during the thirty-sixth minute. Augsburg tied up the score in the 51 minute but the Storm took over the lead for good with freshman, Mosa Shayan’s goal from 18 yards out.
