Recent rumors that students at Simpson are dissatisfied with Simpson’s health services, apparently are just that, rumors.

Unlike some colleges, Simpson does not have a college-owned health clinic or on-call health professionals, but the college does offer services to help students when they are in need of medical attention.

Students can also go to the Mercy Indianola Detroit Medical Clinic located at 112 E. Detroit St., Mercy Indianola Medical Clinic located at 108 N. Jefferson St., or Methodist Lutheran Physicians and Clinics located at 1504 N. First St. for free.

“The school covers x-rays, strep and mono testing, stitches and labs if they can be done in the clinic,” said Michelle Cross, a Registered Nurse who works part-time for Simpson.

The student health services will also give flu and meningitis shots to provide convenience for students.

Cross is also available to students who need medical attention.

Her office is located in the Student Development Office in BSC.

Cross’ office hours are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The staff in the Student Development Office at BSC is available to assist students when Cross is unavailable.

The hours are Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and every fourth Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Most students are satisfied with the services Simpson does offer to its students.

“The nurse was very helpful and friendly in assisting me when I was sick, said Freshman Rachel Masters. “My mom wasn’t here to take care of me, but she was a close second.”

“One of the trainers for the soccer team told me that I needed to go to the doctor, so I went to see the nurse but she wasn’t there”, said Freshman Amy Leblanc. “It wasn’t a big deal at all because student development was very helpful in helping me make a doctor’s appointment,” said freshman Amy Leblanc.

What if students don’t have transportation to off-campus facilities?

“Even if you don’t have a car to get to a clinic, there is one (the Detroit Clinic) that is two blocks from campus,” said Cross.

If there is ever an emergency, students should, first call 911 or find an RA because both are fully equipped with first aid kits and can perform CPR if needed.
