Whether watching the big game for the action-packed football or attention-grabbing commercials, many Simpson students will be tuned in for this year’s Super Bowl.

ABC network will have live coverage of Super Bowl XL, which will take place in Detroit, Mich., on Feb. 5. The Pittsburgh Steelers will play the Seattle Seahawks for the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the title of Super Bowl Champions. The game starts at 5 p.m. with the pre-game show expected to start around 2:30 p.m.

Although Simpson may be 600 miles from Detroit, students will still be able to celebrate and watch the contest.

After the success of the first ever Iowa versus Iowa State bash, CAB is now planning its inaugural Super Bowl party.

Sports fans will be able to hang out in the Brenton Student Center and cheer on their favorite team while watching the game on a large projection screen in the grill area. Throughout the evening, appetizers will be served. Students will also have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes.

“We have not done a Super Bowl party before,” senior and CAB president Evan Schaefer said. “There was a great turnout for the Iowa game, so we decided to go ahead and do it for the Super Bowl, too.”

CAB will not be the only group on campus to host an event. SAE will hold a social gathering in honor of the game. Members of the fraternity are inviting friends to their house. They plan on getting together an hour before the game and ordering pizza and subs. Senior Aaron Roland is helping to organize the celebration.

“The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year,” Roland said. “People who don’t watch football watch the Super Bowl.”

Sophomore Chris Hixson agrees the Super Bowl is not just any football game. In the past, Hixson has even dressed in costume to show his support for a team.

When the Packers made it to the big game, he made sure he wore his Brett Favre jersey and his CheeseHead.

This year the Packers won’t be playing, but he’s supporting Pittsburgh. He has already put his prediction in for a 17-point victory.

Hixson is not the only one who celebrates the Super Bowl enthusiastically. His whole family has created a tradition around the special Sunday.

“Every year we have people at our house,” Hixson said. “We gather with some friends and family and eat a lot of food. Sometimes it’s big and sometimes it’s little.”

The women of Delta Delta Delta will be hosting a small gathering as well. The house is looking forward to the event as a morale booster and a way to get reacquainted after the holiday break.

Some definite sports fanatics in the house who have followed the NFL season are looking forward to watching the big game. Others are more excited about socializing and catching the entertaining advertisements.

“Some people just want to watch for the commercials and talk during the game,” junior Kelsey Volkens said. “But some actually want to watch the game.”
