Simpson will host the 14th-annual Latino College Exposition Nov. 15 in Cowles Athletic Center.

The exposition is expected to bring 150 Latino students from the Des Moines area to campus to talk with colleges, learn about higher education and even sit in on Simpson classes.

The Latino College Expo Committee chose Simpson over a number of other Central-Iowa locations.

“We’ve been putting a bug in their ear to get it here for a number of years,” said Director of Admissions Alison Swanson. “We want to show these students what an outstanding community we have.”

Since last February, Swanson has been organizing the event by collecting applications from students to come, getting t-shirts ready and organizing classroom visits.

“Art classes have been the top choice for students attending,” Swanson said.

Along with the organization, Swanson worked with senior Omar Padilla and Keep It Memorable Sports, a video company that handles Simpson’s sports videos, to create a short video to welcome students to campus.

The video will be displayed during the opening ceremony and features Padilla greeting students in Spanish and English. He welcomes them to Simpson and pushes for them to challenge themselves academically to realize their dreams.

The Latino students, all either juniors or seniors, will register at 8 a.m. Thursday. They will then go to Pote Theatre for the opening ceremony.

Simpson students can expect these high-school students to be sitting in on 10 and 11 a.m. classes. The exposition will run through the morning and afternoon.

“It’s exciting, and it’s been fun to organize,” Swanson said.
