Simpson has its fair share of leaders, and more than 30 of them will be heading to Clive for a leadership retreat on Nov. 17-18.

The Student Leadership Retreat is being brought to students by the Campus Activities Board and Student Government Association.

The students will discuss critical issues facing student leaders on campus. Various speakers and alumni have been invited to participate.

“One of the college’s trustees [Jordan Hansell] is going to be a keynote speaker,” said Rich Ramos, assistant dean of students and SGA and CAB adviser.

Though many of the participants will be campus leaders, the conference is not limited to students in leadership positions.

“It’s open to anyone and to any year,” said Lindsey Hunzelmen, assistant director of student activities.

The retreat will not only center on leadership but also building community among students.

“The focus that was originally brought to us was focused around leadership, community and how we make a community and Simpson a better community better for everybody,” Ramos said.

Though this is the first year the retreat is being held, enior Eric Adams, student body president, hopes this could become an annual event.

“In the future we hope to have it earlier in the semester, maybe in the second or third week of school,” Adams said.

This event has been in the works for some time now with SGA planning the event during the past two months.

“(Students going on this trip will be) leaving campus around 4 p.m. on Friday and hopefully getting back onto campus around 3 p.m. on Saturday,” Ramos said.

Adams feels this is a great opportunity for students.

“It is a new opportunity for students here at Simpson, and it should be very helpful for the campus as a whole,” Adams said.
