Assistant Football Coach Kevin Ferguson may not be on the field right now, but he keeps plenty busy during the offseason with recruiting, traveling and hunting.

Ferguson is originally from Newton, Iowa and graduated from Simpson College in 2001 with a degree in physical education. He taught middle school for a year and then a year of high school in Norwalk before being asked to coach football at Simpson. Ferguson had no problem taking the college up on its offer.

“I had a great experience in football,” Ferguson said. My freshman year we played in the semi-final round of the national play-offs against Mt. Union. I had a good experience because of the good people here. This is one of my biggest selling points as a recruiter, and I always try to do my part to pass this on.”

Ferguson stays busy with recruitment during the offseason.

“We show them around and entertain them with all the great things Simpson has to offer,” Ferguson said. “Our goal as a football staff is to get 50-60 new freshmen recruits each year.”

When he’s not busy bringing in new students to play football, Ferguson likes to spend time outdoors.

“I love to spend time with family and friends and hunt, fish, and travel,” Ferguson said. “I’m in the process of planning a trip with a couple of buddies in the late fall or early winter to northern Canada, which is approximately a 40-hour drive each way, to hunt caribou.”

Coaching is still Ferguson’s first love, and he realizes the impact he has on his players.

“I really enjoy building relationships with the athletes,” Ferguson said. “It is at this time they are beginning to transition into the real world and they are also continuing to discover who they are as people. It’s amazing to see the transformation in these athletes from freshman to senior. I strive to have a positive impact their life during this period of time. There is no better honor than to be referred to by players ‘Coach.'”
