Day in the Life of...President John Byrd

by Hattie RoszellStaff Writer

John Byrd, president of Simpson College, never has a boring day.

An average day for Byrd includes many important meetings with the school and community. It’s hard to have a daily routine because nothing is ever the same. On any given day, Byrd could be meeting with community officials, eating lunch with students or flying to South Padre to meet with Simpson alumni.

President Byrd works hard everyday to make Simpson the best it can be, and he strives to stay involved within the community.

Though Byrd’s days can be chaotic, he was able to sum up his daily experience in one sentence.

“It’s challenging, it is full of variety and rewarding,” Byrd said. “Simpson is a great place to be.”

6:00 a.m. – Wake up and check e-mails and calendar

8:00 – Arrive at the office, occasional breakfast meetings, fundraising, several appointments and even more meetings.

11:00-12:30 p.m. – Lunch meetings, lunch with students. “It is a goal of mine to have lunch with everyone before they graduate,” Byrd said.

5:30-6:00 – Possibly go home for the day unless there is a student event.

7:00-10:00 – Attend home games, concerts, theatre or community fundraisers, community sponsored events and possibly travel to different states to meet alumni and others affiliated with Simpson.

10:00 – Go home, check e-mail and finish what is left for the day.
