Who says you can’t stay on campus and bust a move? The annual Hip Hop Dance on Sept.29 is from 8:00 to 11:30 in Great Hall and sponsored by the Multicultural Student Alliance.

There is no cost for the dance but donations of winter clothing and canned goods will be accepted and given to local charities including The Bidwell Riverside Center and the Catholic Worker House, both in Des Moines.

The theme this year is “Mix ‘n’ Match”, suggesting guests grab a crazy outfit from the closet and wear it. The slogan this year is “Get Your Freak on,” taken from the song by Missy Elliott.

“Hip Hop is something people love to dance to,” Mike Wilson, sophomore and vice president of MSA, said. “It’s unique to multicultural identity and is a great way to get people together by breaking down racial barriers.”

According to Wilson, the overall goal of MSA is to increase cultural awareness on campus. There are around 30 members in MSA with five officers.

“I liked the goals that the group has on initiating diversity,” Ali Halvorsen, senior and historian of MSA, said.

Last year the dance was moved from February to late spring due to weather. This year, the group wanted to have it early to get freshmen more involved. By having it early, MSA hopes to increase membership and wants many students on campus to attend, knowing that freshmen especially start choosing what they want to get involved in on campus early in the year.

“Dance is representative of different cultures and all cultures have a specific style of music and dance is a great way to portray that,” Halvorsen said.

While dance can be done through a different number of genres, Andrew Reid, junior and president of MSA, hopes for a favorable response that will be able to continue.

“We want to get a schedule going to have events planned out ahead of time,” Reid said. “The Salsa Dance has also had a great response and is planned for sometime hopefully in October.”

The music this year will be put together by sophomore Adrian Jackson, and will include a play mix full of rap, smooth and slow jams.

“I will be playing some music from artists and groups like Ludacris, 50 Cent, Kanye West, the Yin Yang Twins, Bobby Valentino, Usher and R. Kelly,” Jackson said. “I enjoy putting mixes together and I thought I’d do a favor for Walter and Andrew.”

The Hip Hop dance is a chance to get involved and learn more about MSA, as well as to meet new people.

“We want people to experience something different and come out and have fun with friends,” Walter Lain, assistant dean for multicultural and international affairs and co-staff advisor of MSA, said.
