Men’s golf team determined to have great finish to season

With only the Buena Vista Invitational left, the men’s golf team will head into the conference tournament next weekend in hopes of achieving a conference title.

“The Storm has shown signs of great promise as we prepare for the conference tournament,” Larry Shoop, head men’s golf coach, said. “We have had some very good individual and team scores with senior Captain David Combs and sophomore Brett DeNeve having led the way thus far.”

Shoop commented how pleased he has been with the team’s work ethic this season and that they are approaching the spring schedule with a great sense of purpose.

“They know what can be accomplished and seem to be resolute in accomplishing their goals,” Shoop said.

Shoop mentioned that the remaining events prior to the conference tournament will be used to clearly identify the five varsity positions. He wants his team to continue to play with confidence and gain added consistency.

Shoop believes this group of guys has a positive chemistry, and they challenge and support one another.

“The aspect I most enjoy about this year’s team is that they know what can be accomplished and they are dedicated and determined to reach the top,” Shoop said. “They are fun to be with and they are going to have a great finish to the season.”

Combs believes the team is heading in the right direction.

“We have been able to put up some very solid team scores in our tournaments so far,” Combs said. “This weekend should really help in our preparation for the conference tournament at the end of the month.”

The men’s golf team participated in the Wartburg Invitational April 12-13 and will participate in the Buena Vista Invitational this upcoming weekend. Combs believes these two tournaments will put the team in great shape to contend for a conference title.

“For many of us, this is our last season with the team,” Combs said. “I know that besides enjoying our last golf season together, I think we would all like to go out on top.”

DeNeve is another leader for the men’s golf team and admits they are working hard in order to accomplish the goals the team has set for itself.

“In conference, we will be one of the top couple teams there,” DeNeve said. “We have as good a chance as anyone to win it.”

Senior Cody Scharf is also determined that the team has the ability to reach ultimate success in the upcoming events.

“If we are able to put two solid rounds together back to back, we should be able to compete and win the future meets,” Scharf said. “What I am looking forward to is seeing if we can finish just as strong as we start and see if we can reach our full potential.”

The men’s golf team will travel to Iowa City on April 25 to compete in the first round of the Iowa Conference Championships. They will then travel to Decorah the next weekend to finish off their season.
