The Student Government Association’s decision to purchase a biodiesel processor should be applauded. Their dedication to helping Simpson College meet its sustainability goal will also help the school save money, a priority now more than ever.

The purchase of the Freedom Fueler sets an example for students and the entire community that we can all take steps to reduce our carbon footprints.

Using biodiesel is also another way to work towards the President’s Climate Commitment.

However, the city’s misunderstanding of the fuel shows just how much education has yet to be done.

Biodiesel is promoted and used as an alternative to petroleum fuels. It produces less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional diesel and because it’s produced from renewable resources grown (soybeans) or collected (used cooking oil) locally, it reduces our country’s dependence on foreign oil.

While Simpson’s investment may seem small in the large scheme of things, it is investments like these that add up to make the difference.

Organizers and supporters of the project stuck with it, even when they were challenged. We’re hopeful that leadership bodes well for the future of Simpson.
