Act like a man? Maybe just for a day

Move over David Letterman, I’m taking your job for a moment. Like most other students, I had the best intentions of spending fall break doing homework, working on projects and applying for jobs. Sure, I accomplished a few things. I also managed to watch several back episodes of “Brothers and Sisters,” start my application for “The Amazing Race,” and have some “quality” discussions with my roommates. One of my roommates came home from work recently with an article she’d ripped from a magazine: ’10 things we’d do if we were men for a day.’ Innocent enough, but it got us talking about the great gender debate. Who has it better, girls or guys? Girls are always expected to be put-together and graceful. There’s a lot of work that goes into the finished product. It takes time to do your hair and make up and pick out a cute outfitDon’t get me wrong, being a girl definitely has its perks: free drinks, free dinners and free movies. We have lower insurance rates and longer life expectancies. We got off the Titanic first, and we can ask for directions if we get lost. Still, there are some things about the male species that I’ve always wondered about. For instance, is it really necessary to talk in a super-low voice to prove your masculinity? After reading “Glamour” magazine’s list and talking with others, I thought up my own Top 10 list of things that I would do if I were a guy for a day: 10) Walk around without a shirt on and flex my muscles.9) Lie in bed and whine about a sore throat insisting someone make me chicken noodle soup.8) Grunt while lifting weights.7) Eat and eat and eat and not gain any weight.6) Watch the 2005 Capital One Bowl on ESPN Classic over and over and over.5) Earn more money for doing the exact same job4) Shower. Shave. Shoes. Done3) Spend hours working on my fantasy football team and pout when they lose.2) Crush a beer can on my head1) Pee in the snow. As fun as all that sounds, at the end of the day, I think I’ll stick with being a girl.
