Storm men earn a morale-boosting win After six tough losses, Simpson (5-17, 2-11 IIAC) pulled through with a win against Wartburg (13-9, 7-6 IIAC) Saturday night.  The Storm played tight with the Knights, but a field goal and a free throw in the last minute allowed the Storm to beat the Knights 75-73. “After all the close games we have had, I feel great for our guys,” coach Bruce Wilson said. “They put in a lot of good work.” The lead changed 10 times throughout the game, neither team able to make any large runs. Wilson said he knew that the team would have to stop Wartburg forward Kelly McCarville from scoring in order to put some sort of crack in the Wartburg offense. “The team did a heck of a job against him in the first half,” Wilson said. “He is the heart of their team and we had to shut him down.” Simpson offense was spread around, allowing nine players to earn five points or more. Wartburg only had five players shoot above five points. “A lot of our younger players stepped up tonight,” junior guard Matt Fouch said. “We had good execution at the end of the game, which we have been struggling with all season.” Freshman guard Anthony Miller led the Storm with 17 points, followed by senior forward Andrew Dau with 11 points and senior center Tim Dunlavy with 10. “We wanted to prove to everyone that we are better than our record shows,” Miller said. “We have been working really hard and it has finally paid off.”  Prior loss provides motivation for a big winSimpson (19-3, 12-1) sought nothing but revenge as they outscored Wartburg 84-63. In the previous matchup between the two teams, Wartburg (16-5, 10-2) beat Simpson 94-74.  “I am happy compared to last time we played them,” coach Brian Niemuth said. “We played much more like we are capable of playing.” The Storm shot 51 percent from field goal range and 81 percent from the free throw line. The Knights only shot 35 percent from field goal range and 77 from the line. “We took better care of the ball this time,” Niemuth said. “We turned it over way too much last time.” The Storm took the lead in the first three minutes of the first half and never gave it up. Simpson shot 4-9 in 3-point attempts. Niemuth said he was happy his team played hard and with intensity the entire game. He said that is all he wanted going into the game. Sophomore center Stacey Schutjer led the Storm with 19 points. Junior forward Jeni Hegstrom followed with 15 points and junior guard Amy Hamilton added 14 points to the team total. “I think we all came together tonight,” Schutjer said. “It was definitely a team effort.” The Knights forced the Storm to turn over the ball 24 times, but the Storm out-rebounded the Knights with a total of 43 rebounds. “We definitely identified the shooter and did a lot better on rebounding,” Schutjer said. “Everybody was ready to play. Everybody was fired up.”
