Campus 411: March 4

SGA votes to extend student fee

SGA voted last Wednesday to continue funding the proposed campus center. By a vote of 17-1 members of student government decided to extend the student fee for another three years, through the 2012-2013 school year. Two SGA members were absent for the vote.Student body president Drew Riebhoff said that SGA recognized the value of showing potential donors that students were involved.”We knew the importance of student contributions, not only to show future generations that we cared, but because we understand the message it shows to outside donors that we’re willing to invest our own money into this project.”The fee will continue for three years, increasing to $115 next school year. If construction on the student center has not begun by May 2013, collection of the fee will stop and not start again until construction begins. Senior senator Lucas Mihalovich voted against the fee because he said there were still some unanswered questions.”I didn’t agree that it should be for 36 months. I thought it should be a shorter amount of time because of the circumstances over the last few years and the change in plans.”If construction has not started within three years, then the SGA will have to vote on whether or not to continue the fee.
