Strong shooting lifts Storm past Buena Vista

The Storm are now on a two-game win streak.

Whitney Van Wyk dropped 17 points, Markayla Mahr and Morgan Terpstra grabbed six rebounds apiece and the Simpson women’s basketball team earned its second win in Iowa Conference play over Buena Vista Wednesday night.

The Storm (7-7, 2-1 IIAC) routed the Beavers (6-8, O-3 IIAC), 93-69.

Simpson jumped to an early 23-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of play, going on an 18-4 run. At the half, the Storm were out in front 46-21 and never lost its momentum during the final 20 minutes of the contest.

Van Wyk shot 5-for-11 from the field went 5-of-10 from 3-point territory. The sophomore guard also recorded a team-high six steals in the victory.

Brittany Hedrick tallied 13 points off 6-of-11 shooting while posting six assists. Taryn Barz was also in double-digits with 11 points.

Buena Vista’s Shelby Wiederhoeft notched a double-double despite the Beavers’ loss, scoring a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Buena Vista had three other players score in double-digits (Malarie Gilley, 13; Susan Kies, 12; Lexi Fisher, 11).

The two teams will meet again on Feb. 22 in Storm Lake, the final game of the regular season for Simpson.

The Storm – which is on a two-game win streak – welcomes Luther to town on Saturday for another Iowa Conference showdown on the hardwood. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.
