INDIANOLA, Iowa — Drew Jensen came to Simpson College with intentions of playing football, which is why he chose  his hometown college over other schools in the IIAC. However, when he got to campus, he never thought he would be a school record-holder, especially in the kicking game. Jensen, a junior, hopes to continue his success in the kicking game into his senior year.

Jensen and the Storm took on Loras College at home Oct. 22 in an IIAC matchup. In the game, Jensen made a 22-yard field goal, as well as netting three-fourths of extra point attempts. With his make, Jensen set a record for most field goals made in a single season (10). Although he did become a record-holder, Jensen said he isn’t done just yet.

“There are seven more school records that I am pushing myself to break,” Jensen said. “More importantly than that, I want to keep building relationships and growing with the team. We have an excellent group of guys capable of great things. There is a lot more for us to accomplish and I feel very lucky to get to be a part of it.”

As far as his ability and skill in the kicking game, Jensen has been working for three years to improve his technique and form.

“Being good at kicking is very form dependent,” Jensen said. “Strength also helps, but it means nothing if you don’t have the correct technique. Kickers have to be very detail-oriented during practice and have to learn how to stay focused and calm in all conditions.”

“Even when we score, I try to not let myself celebrate until after I go kick the extra point so the adrenaline won’t throw me off.”

In his collegiate career, Jensen is 23 for 27 on field goals (85 percent) and 56 for 67 on extra points (88 percent). This season, Jensen is 10 for 11 on field goals with a long of 39 yards. He is 13 for 17 on extra points this season as well. Also this season, Jensen was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the IIAC. In the game against Illinois College, Jensen made all four of his field goals, setting a school record for most made field goals in a game, including a 28-yarder with only 1:10 left in regulation. Since then, Jensen has continued his success in the kicking game and looks to upgrade his two-time Honorable Mention All-IIAC selections to an All-IIAC selection this season.

For the rest of the season, Jensen intends to continue making improvements on the field to cement his name into Storm football history. The Storm are 3-4 on the season but are looking to add some W’s with the upcoming schedule. The season concludes with the Storm playing Coe (1st first in IIAC) next week.
