URBANDALE, Iowa — A fugitive who escaped the Warren County Jail earlier this month and his accomplice have been captured following a serious three-vehicle crash in Urbandale.
Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig told KCCI that the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday near 63rd Street and Meredith Drive when Scott Grimes, 26, attempted to flee from authorities.
Two other people were injured in the crash, though their names and conditions are unknown at this time.
Grimes and his girlfriend, Kayla Schultz, 19, had been on the run since Aug. 14.
He was wanted on several charges, including assault on a peace officer, two counts of second-degree theft, three counts of third-degree burglary, possession of controlled substance (third offense), and providing false information, according to online records.
Schultz was wanted on vehicle theft charges in Missouri. Additional charges are pending.
Grimes is being held on $1 million cash-only bail.
The crash remains under investigation.
An inmate who escaped from the Warren County Jail has been seen traveling with a woman sought by Missouri authorities, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release early Monday.
Scott Grimes, 26, escaped around 10:20 p.m. Sunday while a correctional officer was delivering medication to inmates. Grimes got behind the correctional officer and ran from custody.
He was being held for the following charges: assault on a peace officer, two counts of second-degree theft, three counts of third-degree burglary, possession of controlled substance (third offense) and providing false information.
Grimes is a white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, about 155 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.
Officials said Grimes and the woman, identified as Kayla Schultz, 19, were spotted around 3:45 a.m. Monday when they bought gas at a convenience store in New Virginia and then headed toward Interstate 35 in a stolen white 2005 Kia Rio with Iowa license plate EES 792.
That vehicle was found near Bethany, Missouri, Monday morning. Authorities said a blue 2002 Ford Taurus was stolen near where the Kia Rio was found.
Schultz is a white female, 5 feet 6 inches tall and about 128 pounds.
Court records show Grimes was scheduled to begin trial Sept. 15. Schultz is wanted on vehicle theft charges in Missouri.
